Care For Your Kid’s Curly, Wavy, or Straight Hair With These Helpful Tips

Most parents of kids are familiar with the hair battle — tears, screams, and frustration build when you try to brush your kid’s tangled hair. Kids’ hair gets tangled easily and their sensitive scalps make brushing out the tangles an unpleasant experience. Luckily, Aveeno® Kids has tips and products to help reduce the tears and drama!

How to Care For Your Kid’s Hair Type

Hair care is important for kids to learn as part of their daily routine. Brushing kids’ hair not only makes them look more presentable but also keeps their locks healthy by distributing natural oils. To keep your kid’s hair looking good and easy to manage, be sure to follow the brushing tips for each hair type.

The four main types of hair are:

  • Straight — This hair dries straight without a bend or a curl

  • Wavy — This hair dries with an “S” shape or a slight curve

  • Curly — This hair dries with a defined loop pattern

  • Coily — This hair has a tight curl pattern and a lot of volume

Other factors such as hair structure (fine, medium, or coarse) and scalp moisture (dry, normal, or oily) also play a role in how you care for your kid’s hair. The Aveeno® Kids product line has three products to support your child’s hair care. Aveeno® Kids hair products can help you tackle your kid’s hair and they are easy for children to use! This helps empower kids to successfully take on new self-care challenges.

Straight Hair Care Tips

Straight Hair Care Tips

Kids with straight hair often have more issues with oiliness. Straight hair lacks volume and often hangs close to the scalp. Aveeno® Kids 2-in-1 Shampoo & Conditioner is a great option for kids with straight hair since it delivers a balance of gentle cleansing and conditioning.

Straight hair is best to brush when it is only slightly damp or dry. If your child has a lot of tangles, detangling spray can help. After applying the hair detangler throughout your kid’s hair, gently brush one section of hair at a time. A wet brush generally runs through the hair more smoothly, but a comb may be needed for fine tangles. If your kid’s hair tangles easily, putting their hair in braids while they sleep will help prevent tangling during the night.

Wavy Hair Care Tips

Wavy Hair Care Tips

Wavy hair is in between — it’s not quite curly and not quite straight. Wavy hair that is almost curly may be more prone to dryness than wavy hair that is almost straight. Wavy hair is also prone to some frizziness and tangles. Aveeno® Kids 2-in-1 Shampoo & Conditioner can help tame your child’s wavy hair. Formulated with oat extract, this dual shampoo and conditioner is designed for kids’ developing hair. It hydrates and detangles hair, leaving it soft, smooth, and easy to manage.

If your kid has wavy hair, you can brush it when it is wet or dry. You may find that it is easier to brush it when there is still conditioner in the hair. Using a wide-toothed comb is a good option for kids with wavy hair. Avoid using brushes with stiff bristles as that may temporarily ruin some of your child’s natural waves.

Curly Hair Tips

Curly Hair Tips

Children with curly hair may be more prone to frizzy hair because curly hair dries out more easily. You can help your child keep their curls in check with Aveeno® Kids Curly Hair Shampoo and Aveeno® Kids Curly Hair Conditioner. Both products help provide additional moisture and are formulated with oat extract and shea butter. These products help improve the manageability of curly hair, define curls, and control frizz for 24 hours — all while being gentler than adult products.

Since curly hair is drier and more prone to frizz and breakage, it is best to brush curly hair when it is wet. If your kid is a social butterfly like Lucky, be sure to keep detangling spray and a wide-toothed comb on hand to remove tangles from their curly hair on non-hair wash days!

Coily Hair Tips

Coily Hair Tips

Similar to curly hair, coily hair is dry and brittle which means that it can easily break. Support your kid’s coily hair with deep conditioning and moisturizing hair products. Coily hair does not need washing as often as the other hair types. In fact, washing coily hair too often (more than twice a week) can damage the delicate hair. One trick is to use a cleansing conditioner instead of shampoo to help the hair retain moisture.

Never brush coily hair when it is dry! Brushing dry coily hair can be painful because of the tension on the coily hairs. Using a wide-toothed comb is recommended to help keep coily hair in check when it has to be brushed in between showers.
