Easy Stress-Free Hairstyles for Kids
It's no secret among parents that kids don't like to sit still while you’re working with their hair. From washing to brushing to styling, taking care of your kid's hair can be challenging. Keep reading to see which easy hairstyles can work best for your kid's hair type.
How to Care For Your Kid’s Hair Type
Different types of hair require different types of care [link to "Care For Your Kid's Curly, Wavy, or Straight Hair With These Helpful Tips"]. While straight hair can be brushed when it is dry, curly and coily hair should only be combed with a wide-toothed comb when the hair is wet.
Find & Use the Right Hair Products for Their Hair Type
Since kids’ hair is more delicate than adult hair, avoiding products with harsh cleansers is recommended. Consider checking the ingredients in your kids’ hair products to try to avoid ingredients such as parabens, phthalates, sulfates, dyes, or phenoxyethanol.
When you use Aveeno® Kids hair products, you can be sure that your kid’s hair is getting gently cleansed and hydrated, and manageability is improved.
The Aveeno® Kids Curly Shampoo and Curly Conditioner work together to gently clean and provide more moisture to super wavy or curly hair.
Aveeno® Kids 2-in-1 Shampoo and Conditioner is a convenient one-stop-shop solution for kids with straight or slightly wavy hair.
Stress-Free Hair Styles for Your Kid’s Hair
Stress-free hairstyles are perfect for busy mornings. Here are some easy hairstyles that will help keep your kid’s hair out of their face and is less prone to tangles during the day.
Simple Ponytail
The simple ponytail is the fastest hairstyle for long, straight, or slightly wavy hair. First, make sure a hair tie is nearby, and then comb your child’s hair. Gather the hair into a single bunch and support it with one hand while you run the comb through the top and sides of the hair to smooth it. Lift the hair to the height your child finds comfortable and then pull the hair through the hair tie to the appropriate tightness.
Twist Wrap Ponytail
This is one of several ways to enhance a ponytail for kids with straight or slightly wavy hair. Start by making a simple ponytail as described above. Then take a small piece of hair from the ponytail, wrap it around to cover the hair tie, and pin it underneath so it is hidden.
Next, take a small section of hair from each side of your ponytail and twist them together to create a rope pattern, and secure the two small pieces with an elastic hair tie. Create the same twisted rope pattern with the remaining big section of hair and secure that with a hair tie. Wrap the two small pieces of twisted hair over and under in the grooves of the big section and then secure that with a hair tie.
Pigtails
Pigtails are similar to the simple ponytail. However, instead of one bunch of hair on the back of the head, there are two bunches. You can keep pigtails plain or you can braid each pigtail. First, find the part in your child’s hair and use that to separate the hair into two bunches — one on each side of the head. Then use an elastic hair tie to secure each bunch at the level that your child likes.
Double Puffs
Puff buns and twist ponytails are easy and cute hairstyles for girls with coily hair.
Start with detangled hair — consider using detangling spray if the tangles are bad.
To create simple double puffs, part the hair down the middle using a rat tail comb. Secure each puff with a hair tie and add bobbles or accessories to liven up the style!
Twist Ponytails
To create simple twist ponytails, separate the hair into as many sections as you want, keeping in mind that this style usually looks better with at least fifteen sections. The rest is easy — twist the hair in each section and secure it!
Colorful Headband
A headband is an easy solution for kids with short hair or medium-length curly hair. You and your kid can have fun coordinating headbands to match outfits.
Braids
Braids are a very versatile hairstyle. There are many ways to do braids — a single braid down the back, braided pigtails, a single French braid, a double French braid, and more! If your kid has coily hair, a tighter braid such as cornrows may work best.
First, detangle your kid’s hair with a brush or wide-toothed comb. Divide the hair (or section of hair that you are braiding) into three even sections. Braiding requires moderate dexterity of your index fingers and thumbs to manage the three sections! Keep the left section in your left hand, release the middle section, and keep the right section in your right hand. Cross the left section over the middle section, then cross the right section over the (new) middle section. Continue braiding in this manner until you have run out of hair. Be sure to keep the tension even on all three strands as you braid. Secure the end with a hair tie.
Half Up-Half Down
This style is perfect for kids with all hair types — from straight to curly. De-tangle your kid’s hair with a brush or wide-toothed comb, then section off some of the hair from each side of the head and gather it at the back. You can secure it with a hair tie or decorative barrette, braid it, or put it in a bun.
There are tons of kids’ hairstyles out there, so you and your kid will surely find something that you both love! You may find that even some of the basic hairstyles are confusing or don’t turn out like you want the first couple of times. Consider practicing on the weekend. Watching different YouTube videos may also help you get different camera angles of the process.
